Hi, I'm Helen from eSpares
The Qualcast Classic Petrol 35s lawnmower has two belts, it has one that runs between the motor and cutting cassette, this is sometimes called the v-belt, and a toothed belt which runs between the motor and the rear roller.
So if you find the cutting head isn’t turning or the rear roller isn’t rolling, it could well be a problem with the belts. So if either belt is worn, over-extended or completely snapped it will need to be replaced, and that’s what I’m going to show you how to do in this video.
Safety first, always make sure that your lawnmower is off before you start any work, and just to be on the safe side if you check that the throttle is in the stop position or just disengage the spark plug, you can never be too careful.
Now, I’ve removed the grass box and the grass box support and I just need to remove the side cover. It’s held in place by four hex screws so you’ll need a hex head screwdriver or a torx screwdriver will do, I’m going to use a torx key.
Now with the cover removed we can see both belts, the front one here and the rear toothed one. You’ll be able to see if there is any damage to yours, mine are fine but I’m going to replace them anyway. To get to the front belt I need to remove this pulley cover, so I’m just using a socket and that just comes away and then you can just slide the front belt off.
Now the rear belt is a little trickier, I have to take the front pulley off, which just pulls off and then I need to remove this top pulley which is connected directly to the motor spindle. I don’t have a socket big enough so I’m going to use a wrench. I need to hold it firmly between my fingers and then undo it. So just remove this top pulley and then I can just pull off the toothed belt.
It can be a wee bit tricky to get it out of this gap here and to get the new on again it can be a bit tricky. If you put it on the bottom and then rotate the pulley it will go on, and then pop it round the top. Now you want to make sure it’s on the outside of this plastic part here, and then I want to put the top pulley back on, there we go, top pulley is on tight.
Now I just need to put the lower pulley back on and then we can pop on the new v-belt. This should go on pretty easily. Give it a few turns to make sure it’s running smoothly, and then I’ll pop the pulley cover back on, which covers the belt and then I just need to put the cover back on - there we go.
Belts for all makes of lawnmower are available on the eSpares website.
