Yes this is a common problem if the dryer is hot and the air flow is stopped then these thermostats will cut out. If you measure them with a meter they should read short circuit, replace if this is not the case.

Answer this question

just wondering if theres a way to check if the thermostats are broken or its a heater element fault before deciding whether or not its worth fixing the machine

the thermostat should read less than 1 ohm if measured with a multimeter. You can see this in our video: How to use a multimeter

It is possible the timer is faulty as this will turn off the heat ten minutes before the cycle stops. If you allowed the drier to heat up and then stopped it whilst hot it could have caused the new thermostat cut out to fail. Check the thermostats again as they should measure less than one ohm resistance.

Hi Mel, it depends what type of smell is emanating from the dryer. If it's an electrical type smell, it could be any of the electrical components. I'd advise unplugging at the wall, and then using the process of elimination to diagnose the problem. Check this video out to see how a tumble dryer works, and use it as a guide for checking the dryer: http://www.espares.co.uk/advice/tumble-dryers/a/9/114/how-a-tumble-dryer-works.html.

Answer this question

Dryer initially switches on, but shortly after, turns itself off! Is this the thermostat? If I 'leave it' for an hour or so, it will allow me to 'switch it on', for a very short time again!

  • The thermostats are quite universal, if you have t/stats for temp. control on your dryer then these will work. (its in the description; "Universal.." Providing they fit physically and are in the correct controlling position to do the job. By Neuro - Wirral - 19 November 2009
