AEG Lavamat Tub Dampers. 01 July 2012

10 year-old washing machine. Excessive vibration and noise developed at 1200 rpm spin. Took back off and Tub Dampers felt slack. Fitted a pair of new Dampers supplied by espares. Original Damper fixings ( Bolt 80n ) were difficult to remove. I used a slip wrench as a lever on the polythene bolt heads. The 4 Bolts were successfully extracted but were damaged in the process so it was good that new Bolts were supplied. The original Bolts were fitted with a white grease lubricant. This white grease was not supplied with the new parts so I salvaged some from the old Bolts and applied it to the new ones before fitting. I compared the old Dampers with the new. The new ones were much more effective so I was expecting a fix. When the machine was tried with the new parts fitted there was still a noise and vibration at 1200 rpm spin. Also the wash emerged contaminated with grease smears. Further investigation revealed that the Drum bearing had failed. A new rear-half of the Tub is required to fix this along with a very major strip-down of the machine. The part would cost about £ 155-00 so ; in my opinion, it was an uneconomic repair to a 10-year-old appliance. The machine was scrapped with the new parts fitted. I should have been more thorough with my fault-finding in the first place.

Also to note from above user:

In order to check the Drum bearing of a 10-year-old AEG Lavamat washing machine it would be best to slip the drive belt off between the motor and the pulley on the back of the Drum. This will release the Drum from the tension of the drive belt. Grab hold of the Drum agitating fins through the front port hole and rock it up and down. I found significant play on my old machine. This play is much less with the drive belt in place.
