  Does anybody make a generic? 28 July 2014

  Atco used to have a reputation for quality but the absence of their mowers from garden centres probably says it all. This is my third replacement of this part whereas my cheapo B&Q own brand machine still never misses a beat. Why make the gear in nylon? And if it has to be nylon why does the part have to come with a machined steel shaft. The nylon gear probably cost a few pence in the making and if it was replaceable alone then atco owners could keep a handful in stock. This is really poor design. The bolts holding the mounting for this part do tend to shake loose and the axle bearing into which they mount is soft alloy so the threads strip if you overtighten. To get the bearing off the roller shaft needs a hubpuller. So follow the advice of the previous reviewer and use some 'loctite' or similar when reassembling and take a bit of care. Atco used to produce a small kit of replacement bolts/ screws and circlips for this task. Espares may be able to provide this. Cheers to espares for making the shaft easily available.

  Good part 01 August 2012

  Had to replace this part due to teeth on original part worn. Also replaced the ring gear to match. Part was easy to fit and removed some of the bearing play in the associated housing. It is advisable to apply thread lock compound to the big nut securing the pulley as the captive nut can come loose.

  Fitting New Shaft- Qualcast Cylinder Petrol Mower -Cassic 43S 17 October 2011

  Once having discovered the fault with lawnmower ( rear drum jamming when clutch disengaged ) as worn plastic cogs on the shaft the fitting was reasonably straightforward. You need to remove the outer plastic cover (4 screws)which exposes the drive belt pulleys,Remove the big pulley and belt on the right hand side (one large nut),The threaded end of the shaft is then exposed, Undo the three screws holding the shaft housing in place and then withdraw the shaft.Replace by following the above steps in reverse

  Failure through bad design 20 May 2009

  The gear on this shaft fails due to wear, due to the bearing housing casting failing and putting the gear mesh out Bosch sell a fix which is expensive. espares price is fair, postage expensive, delivery quick
