The critical tool 28 August 2013

The critical (and secret) tool here is a 13mm ring spanner. Slide it over the barb mentioned in the video. No need for a flat bladed screwdriver, especially when the space is tight. It collapses the barb (and it also leaves both your hands free to pull out the nylon spindle). Makes everything so much easier !! Thanks espares, you saved me a fortune !!

Replacing dampers on a wt 960 hot point washing machine. 07 May 2013

Ok not being able to level my machine for some time and listening to it banging away, I thought something else needed changing, and the dampers came to mind, I found the required parts, and ordered them. When the parts came t hrough they were of different construction, never mind obviously upgraded, looking at how they fitted to the machine, they were correct. Turn off the electric! Placing a few towels in a heap on the floor and lowering the machine onto them allowed access through the open bottom and also meant the machine was stable and was easier to lft up, don't forget, the tub weights they are heavy. A pair of pliers to hold and push through the retaining pin at the top of the damper, and a screwdriver to undo the retaining screws at the bottom and the damper can be pushed towards the centre of the access hole which will release the 2 retaining teeth on the base plate. Job done when putting the new ones on engage the teeth, and push the base plate down to put in the 2 screws BEWARE the teeth break easy, qualitity of plastic, but go ahead and install the damper the screws hold it in place. Extend the damper by pulling it and put it in place and push the new retaining pin in place. Job done. If you are going to the trouble of changing the dampers, 30 minute job tops check the rest of the machine, drop the bottom rubber and clean it out, and the pump. Cost for parts with packaging 30:00 Fitting time 30 minutes Ease of fitting 5 out 10, the top retaining pins can be tricky to start moving Checking the old dampers and I wondered why I changed them? Turned on the machine and done a 1600 spin and it was like new, no noise. no banging or jumping, missus well happy (maybe not though she was ready to buy a new one!) and my pocket 200 quid better off. If your cautious about correct parts phone, they are more than willing to help.

No more loud spin 22 March 2013

Our washing machine was suffering from some noise during spinning and trouble balancing the load to an acceptable level. Fitted new dampers as the old ones appeared to have a lot of play in them - They appear to be an updated design from the items removed. (Hotpoint WT960G). Fitting was relatively straightforward although not much clearance to work - I tipped the machine on its side and access from underneath was sufficient. Retaining pegs have latches on them but a poke at the right point will let them through the holes. The new pegs seemed a much tighter fit to get through the mounts, I recommend a bit of lubricant on them before you try and slide them through - This was the trickiest part of the whole job, mostly due to lack of space. Problem solved, spin is much quieter and much less banging around!!

did the job great service once again 15 October 2012

for any novice fitting this part he or she will have fun getting the old plastic pins out unless you have the right tool, a tip .Get a 13 mil socket and push it on the sharp end that will push down the lug and allow you to push it through .put some vaseline on the new ones then they just push in

New dampers, happy machine! 25 July 2012

I fitted a new pair of dampers as part of machine refurbishment prompted when the counter weight fell off the front drum asssembly. The new dampers seem to have made the machine a lot smoother on the fast spin cycle than it used to be. The parts are good quality and come with new fitting pins. Take a look at the new pins before you attempt to remove the old ones and you'll notice a small latch at the pointed end of the pin. You need to depress this on the old pins in order to pull them out. If you've got the latch depressed the pin slides out pretty easily if not you'll end up fighting them too the death (mostly of you knuckles) I found the job easier to carry out with the machine tilted over at about 45° (and propped) as the drum swings out of the way nicely. You need to tilt it on the other side when you do the other damper. There are two small screws on the underside of the machine beneath each damper. Undo these and then the damper is simply unhooked. Relacement is (as the Haynes manual always says) the 'reverse of removal' but make sure that the pins on the drum end of the damper are pushed in far enough for the latch to spring into place so that the pin can't work its way out.
