Ask a Question

Samsung RSH1FBRS - fridge temperature is fine but freezer will not cool enough. The display is set at -25, display says it is -25 but food is not freezing and my standalone thermometer says temperature is 0 to +1. (Ironically, fridge temperature??) I have cleaned (hoovered) the back of the appliance, it is over 2inches from wall, I've tried to reset it by unplugging for 30 minutes. The appliance is making what I feel is the correct noise and kicks in louder if I press the power freeze. I'm guessing it's a sensor problem but defrost sensor / temperature sensor / thermal fuse ???? Please can you help me!

Check the temperature is below -18 in the freezer as the ice maker will normally not start if the sensor underneath does not identify it is cold enough. If the temperature is correct then suspect the ice tray sensor.

This is most likely to be a defrost problem. See our video: How to diagnose a fault with a frost free fridge freezer http://www.espares.co.uk/advice/2/2113/how-to-diagnose-a-fault-with-a-frost-free-fridge-freezer

If the indicator on the display shows that the machine has turned on to fast freeze it is either a control problem or a board problem and not a sensor problem.

If the freezer is defrosting and the compressor is not 'running' but may occasionally make a loud 'click' and another after 5 to 10 seconds and repeat after about a minute the fault is likely to be the compressor. This would require a fridge systems engineer to resolve the problem.

It is likely you have a defrost problem that has allowed ice to block the evaporator and stop air flow around the appliance. To defrost a frost free appliance you need to empty and open the doors with it switched off for 48 hours to ensure ice built up behind the rear wall can completely clear.

Answer this question

The Fridge freezer switches on and gets cold, when it reaches its temperature the thermostat switches off....but then often does not switch back on again to maintain the working. . It works if I keep manually switching it on and off (but there's more to life than this). What is it likely to be? Can I purchase the part, and can a novice fit it?

If your appliance is a frost free fridge freezer then behind the back of the freezer is a evaporator that can build up with ice. This is cleared by a defrost element and this element may have failed. Check by removing the cover and measuring the resistance, this is likely to be below 500 ohms.

Many ice makers have a small 'test' button fitted. If you press this for more than a couple of seconds the tray will 'cycle' and refill. If the tray does not cycle it may be a issue with the icemaker itself.
