No one really enjoys the hassle of washing up by hand, if the lower spray arm on your dishwashers is constantly coming loose you my have a faulty nut. Replace the defective fitting nut and keep the spray arm screwed in place.

That spray arm's not going anywhere, so it may as well get the dishes done!

1 Question and 1 Answer

I have watched the clip showing how to change the Spray arm retainer but on my machine the upper spray arm is connected to the roof of the machine and it is this arm and nut that keeps falling off. I am reluctant to just dispose of the dishwasher when maybe all my machine needs is a new Nut and maybe a new spray arm. Is this right or should I finally say goodbye to my wonderful machine?

  • I have the same dishwasher (duh!) ;-) And yep, it's now also 28 years old. I also have the same problem you're describing, but yes you could/should replace the nut, because it has a double function, it holds the tiny spray arm just below the roof, and it's used to provide the upper rack's spray arm's funnel of water. When it was still working, my machine was working like a charm, really awesome for such a very old machine from 1987. Since the nut is defective I am noticing a drastical decrease of washing performance in the upper rack. All the stuff, especially glasses don't get properly clean and dry, which means, there is not enough water with rinse aid reaching them at the end of the cycle! And also, stuff which is placed in the right hand side of the upper rack does not get properly clean. Probably, because of the same reason, not enough water is pumped into the funnel, just because of that little nut! That also is telling me, why it's so d*mn expensive. Yes even on the Miele.nl website it costs that much. I am sometimes looking around to find a cheaper replacement. Without any luck so far. Until then I'm still using the dishwasher to wash my dishes, with a little bit of 'modification' at my loading capacities of the upper rack hahaha.. I hope that you have replaced the nut, as your message already was written quite a while ago. and also hope it did revive your awesome dishwasher back to it's full potential.
