From the look of the button unit it suggests that your appliance has an electronic control board. When disconnected you can check continuity on the motor and lamps and if the supply reaches the board. If no other problem is identified in these areas it is reasonable to assume (but not necessarily definitely) a faulty control pcb or module.
I am unable to remove the broken control unit - using a thin knife blade as a lever I can raise one edge, but cannot remove it as don't want to scratch the chrome it's set in. Any tips? Also whats inside? Are there wires inside to disconnect/connect.
