when pushing start button knocks power in house off

This is likely to be a faulty heater or if it is a condenser dryer it can be caused by water leaking in to the heater chamber from over filling.

Crosslee white knight CL 741 15000/1. Needing new door as won't stay closed. Door has striker protusion at the top that I think pushes against something like the thermostat. When I manually hold the door closed, I hear a 'click' like an electrical mechanism clicking, but the dryer doesn't go (it used to). Will replacing thermostat rectify this?

If the thermostat fails it will normally not heat but the motor will run. For information to diagnose your problem see our video: How to Diagnose Tumble Drier Control and Program Problems http://www.espares.co.uk/advice/9/2049/how-to-diagnose-tumble-drier-control-and-program-problems-
