when i turn the washing machine on. nothing happens for five seconds and then it goes bang and a spark comes from the mains and cable filter.

    Hi dee, I'd advise switching the washing machine off at the wall straight away! I'd then advise leaving it an hour before you go near it because of any residual current left in the machine. Then I'd look at all electrical components from the plug and mains cable and filter as well as the PCB and check for signs of damage. You could use a multimeter to diagnose what's causing the surge if there's no physical evidence. Main thing is to be careful! Don't want you to electrocute yourself.
