What is the tolerance between the setting by the control knob and the actual temperature in the oven

My current oven always heats up to a higher temperature than is set by the control knob by anything from about 10 degrees to about 40 degrees, with an average of about +20 degrees. Will a new thermostat correct this error or do I have to accept it. After all this is only a domestic appliance not a space capsule!
