Should the white plastic stick out of the metal rectangle of the washing machine or should it sit flush inside

I have a whirlpool awz612 I have ordered the interlock and fitted it However it looks like the interlock is marginally too big for the metal hole in the machine an therefore the plastic rectangle is inside the machine and not sticking through the whole This means the machine keeps saying open Do I need to try and make the hole I the machine bigger to get the interlock through Many thanks

You need to pass the lip of the surround through the hole and slide the lock into place. Note it needs to be at an angle and not flat to do this.
