What causes this cover to fail the unit im looking at it uas burnt if i replace it is there a bigger issue with the microwave

Microwaves must not be used without something (food or liquid) to absorb the energy. The cover does not burn but food or grease on it does and that damages it. If you can remove and clean the surround it will be OK to just replace it.
