Will knob work without spring?

What does the spring actually do on the knob please? The current control knob for dual oven/grill does not switch off properly but we don't know if it ever had a spring on the knob, the other knobs don't seem to have them either. It is a Parkinson Cowan Ovation 60 GLX

The spring allows the knob 'skirt' to be held in place yet the knob itself can be pushed in to turn on and ignite. This may be different to your cooker.
