Water Not Draining From My Dishwasher

Dishwashers have become very popular over recent years to become one of the most used luxury appliances. It has been proven that using the dishwasher to clean your plates and cutlery uses less water than washing up by hand. Now that’s a saving we all want to make.

Whilst the dishwasher is our fairy godmother helping with the washing chore, you may face uninvited faults – and one such fault can be - not draining correctly or at all. Luckily, we can unplug this problem for you and talk you through the two most likely causes of dishwashers not draining.

Soon you’ll have squeaky clean dishes coming out your dishwasher again.

Cause 1

If your dishwasher is refusing to drain then you can follow these simple steps to help unclog your appliance, and get it back to enjoying its optimum water flow.

Over time, food debris or grease can linger around the pump and pipe work, this can cause a blockage that can prevent the pump from draining the water.

Safety First! Please ensure that you have disconnected the appliance from the mains before starting any repair.

  • If you use your dishwasher regularly, it’s recommended to clean the filters regularly by giving them a quick rinse under the tap.
  • Check inside the sump for unwanted bits and pieces that may be causing the blockage - when removing the blockage be careful, as you may have sharp surprises inside the sump.
  • Inspect the drain hose at the back for any hindrance - and ensure there are no kinks that could stop the water from flowing through freely.
  • Test your dishwasher after refitting all the parts back in, as you may need to remove the pump to access the pump impeller to clean.

Cause 2

Drain Pump

A common cause of dishwasher woes is a blocked or faulty drain pump, and if this has happened in your machine it will prevent the waste water from draining out - causing the wash cycle to stall.

If you didn’t already know, the drain pump is that crucial component that forces the water through the drain hose.

If there are no signs of a blockage within the filters or drain hose - then it is likely to be the pump.

Below we give you some tips on what you can look for when trying to identify what could be causing a drain pump to be blocked.

Safety First! Please ensure that you have disconnected the appliance from the mains before starting any repair.

  • Glassware can break during the wash if this has happened the shards may have fallen and washed into the pump
  • Using a multimeter test the resistance of the pump at its terminals and if you don’t get a reading on your meter; unfortunately you are going to need to replace the pump.
