My Washing Machine Has No Power

When your washer is dead and shows no sign of life - you could begin looking online for a replacement. However, don't just presume this is the solution to your problem.

Have a read of this article to see if we can help point you in the right direction, without the need for a costly call out charge, or the new appliance you were thinking of getting.

Cause 1

Mains Fuse

If your washing machine is no longer working - no lights and no noises - you may find that your washing machine has finally bitten the dust...but perhaps it hasn’t!

If the fuse within the plug has blown, simply checking it and replacing a blown fuse may not tell you the full story.

To begin, take your plug fuse out and using a multimeter (see our How To Use A Multimeter Guide) to test for continuity, or you can replace the fuse with another of the correct value.

If checking and replacing the fuse has not identified the problem you can check the power supply to your appliance.

  • Unplug the washer
  • Plug in another appliance that you know works to test the socket

If you are stuck facing an appliance with no power check your home's fuse box, if something is going wrong the washer will blow the fuse or trip the electrics, replacing the fuse or resetting the trip should bring power back to your appliance.

If after replacing the fuse, your washing machine loses power again please be aware that the fault could lie with another problem.

Please see our blowing fuses article for other possible causes.
