If the motor cannot be dismantled or there are not brushes available then you will have to replace the motor.

  • hi as a follow up, I have removed the Miele 728 motor from my Cat and Dog 700, but it seems to be a sealed unit and the brushes are not accessible, I guess that this means a new motor? By Steve - Tring - 18 March 2014

If the motor is also 'spluttering and popping' it is likely that the brushes are worn out. For information on how to replace these see our video: http://www.espares.co.uk/advice/4/2177/how-to-replace-numatic-henry-carbon-brushes

Answer this question

The vacuum starts up and gets to a certain speed and then the red light flashes briefly and it's as if I've turned the vacuum off altogether, it then starts spinning up again by itself. It does this constantly, I can try and change the variable power but it makes no difference except the power does in fact increase before it cuts out again. Online reading seems to indicate the Electronic Unit on the back of the motor, I did pull it apart and inspect it, no dry solder or anything that looks suspicious unless the resistor is faulty or the PCB has something wrong with it that I can't see? Does this sound like the issue? Is it worth replacing if the vacuum is 10 years old? Motor likely to go soon anyway?

Check for blockages and remove the bag and filter to ensure air flow is not restricted. If the problem continues check motor brushes and if the armature of the motor is blackened the motor may be failing.

Answer this question

Hello Please can you help. The motor sputters and pops when running. This becomes progressively worse as speed increases with the occasional smell of burning. There also appears to be excessive arcing around the commutator. I have changed the brushes and cleaned around the commutator but the fault persists. I also have an older S500 series model which suffered the same problem which I was able to fix by changing the brushes. Although the brushes are not worn out it is now showing the same symptoms. I was wondering if it was the control boards. I would be grateful for your advice. Thanks Nigel

It is likely the motor armature is going shorted windings causing this problem.

Answer this question

My cleaners suction goes up and down when in operation without altering the control. Altering the control will rectify the problem for a short while. I have checked hoses and filters but the problem is definitely related to the control switch. Do I need a new part or is this repairable ?

If you have had this cleaner for some time and this problem has just started to occur check and replace the filters first. It is possible the problem may be due to the machine deliberately controlling the air flow as you used it.

Check if there are any signs of burning on this module. If none are found it is more likely to be the motor that has failed.
