The washer runs with good pressure for about a minute then stops. After a couple of minutes it powers up again and runs for another minute before going off again for a couple of minutes etc etc

This suggests the motor is overheating and a thermal cut out in the motor is tripping. Then as it cools the trip resets. This is almost certainly due to a faulty motor.
