If you already own a steam cleaner or steam mop, there are some simple, yet effective tips to follow in order to help you maintain it and keep it running smoothly.

Cleaning Your Steam Mop & Steam Cleaner:

  • Wash any cloths or towels used by our steam cleaner, in hot water only and avoid using fabric softener. Once the steam cleaner cloths have been washed, it is best to leave them to air dry – although it is possible to tumble dry them, if you’re not using drying sheets.

Such sheets emit chemicals which the cloths absorb when heated, and these cab be transferred through the steam when using the steam cleaner.
  • Wipe down your steam cleaner before and after each use with a damp cloth. This will help prevent dust and other airborne debris that can spread about your home when in use, from gathering.
  • If you're using a steam mop, drain the tank after each use and allow the tank to air dry, then reseal the plug and put the steam mop back in storage.
  • Descale your machine – it’s no secret that water contains minerals, which can be left behind (in the form of limescale) in your steam cleaner’s boiler tank and hinder the performance of the appliance.
  • To keep your steam cleaner functioning effectively, it’s important to remove any traces of limescale, by either using a dedicated limescale remover which comes with your steam cleaner or by making your own solution, using 1 1/2 ounces of baking soda and 1 quart of water, then:

    I) Fill your steam cleaner’s tank with the mixture

II) Turn the steam cleaner on as normal so that it begins to heat the mixture

III) Let the unit heat up and keep it warm for 1-2 hours

IV) Use the steam cleaner for about a minute to run the mixture through the machine

    V) Unplug the machine and allow it to cool for 3-4 hours, before emptying the mixture from the machine

VI) Flush and rinse the water through the system and you're done

General Steam Cleaning Tips:

  • When using your steam cleaner, do not add any chemicals or soaps. The only time anything other than water should be added to the machine is when you are descaling (following the advice outlined above).
  • Do not use water which has been treated with a softener in the machine. Water softeners remove the calcium and magnesium from the water and replace it with sodium. The increased sodium levels in softened water can damage and shorten the life of the steam cleaner.
  • Always make sure the steam cleaner has fully cooled before carrying out any maintenance on it.
