How to Replace the Oven Door Hinges on a Smeg Cooker

If your Smeg oven door isn't closing properly and you can't see any obstructions, the fault probably lies with your door hinges. Door hinges can grow faulty or worn over time, causing the oven door to not close properly. This results in heat escaping, food not cooking properly and your cooker using more energy. This particular oven, like many ovens, uses a double lever hinge mechanism. These mechanisms can be found on either side of the oven, keeping the oven door connected to the appliance.

On both hinges, push the small catch on the lower levers up. This will allow you to remove the door and pull it away from the oven.

Once the door is set aside, remove the screws around the door's interior using a screwdriver or drill. These can be found above the hinges and at the top of the door. This will allow you to take the door apart and access the hinges.

With the screws removed and the door taken apart, you can now go ahead and remove the old hinges.

While the door is taken apart, we recommend giving it a good clean with some oven cleaner and cloth.

You can now go ahead and slot the new hinges into place on either side.

Now it's time to put the oven door back together again. Start by lowering the inner side of the door back into place over the hinges.

Then return the screws and, using your drill, screw the door back together again.

Before refitting the door to the oven, you'll need to latch the hinges into place. Using a kitchen towel to avoid hurting your hands, push the hinge down towards the latch.

Then, once the hinge is in place, secure it in place with the small latch. Remember to repeat this for the hinge on the other side too.

When refitting the oven door, you'll notice a little notch in the hinges. This notch should rest on the oven door frame when you slot the door back into place.

To refit the oven door, simply slide it into place with the hinges going back into their slots.

Here, you can see the door hinge notches fitting comfortably onto the frame.

Finally, make sure the oven door is fully open once you have refitted it. This will allow you to replace the hinge latches.

You can then close the oven door.
