i hve taken the one out of my smeg retro dishwasher and its open circuit does this mean its failed?

We believe this thermostat is closed until the correct temperature is reached at which time it will open so it suggests your thermostat is faulty.

Model:DWI612C has this listed as a temperature probe. It does not show its position on the exploded diagram and is likely to be either touching the 'skin' of the cavity base or possibly in the door touching the liner.
