Washing Machine Motor Carbon Brushes

If you have noticed that the washing machine is not spinning at its normal levels, or is perhaps making more noise than is usual, then it could be due to a faulty carbon brush.

The carbon brush conducts electricity from the fixed parts of the motor through the moving parts of the motor and is a key internal part of the workings of your washing machine. With the help of eSpares, and this replacement spare carbon brush, we could soon get you back to a fully working washing machine again.

were do the brushes go in this machine top or bottom of the machine

In addendum to the information left by Derek645 - after unplugging the machine go and take a 10 minute tea break. Some components within the machine will hold electrical charge and should be allowed to drain before you start work.

  • Rule 1: Turn off the power, some parts are live internally even with the machine off. Locate Motor. look at the end with the wired connector. adjacent to that you will see the ends of the white casing of the brushes. carefully remove the electrical spade connections, then push white retaining clip on brush, brush slides out. replace then turn spring release clip on side of brush (look at the old brush to locate and compare with new) By derek645 - portsmouth - 01 November 2009

This is the fourth time these brushes have gone on my machine. Until now i have called someone out to do it. The question is the brushes that are on the machine at the min are Black, Do they have to be replaced with black brushes ? or can i fit White ones ? Which i take are better brushes. Cheers John

Hi John340, The colour of the brushes will be dictated by the manufacture - the generic brush may be one colour whilst the genuine part might be another. Where possible I would always recommend buying the genuine spare part for your appliance. You can find out if they're the right carbon brushes for your machine by locating your machine model number in our 'models this part fits' section on each page. For assistance finding your model number please see our guide: http://www.espares.co.uk/findingmodelnumbers.aspx#a7

  • Colour makes no difference, as long as the brushes are the correct ones. Some motors are hard on brushes, hence the need to change them so often. Normally the brushes are the same colour as those originally fitted, but as I said it makes no difference if they are the correct set. It might be that the black set have a softer carbon insert than the white ones, but no problem in trying a white set and see if they last longer. Make sure that the white set are the correct set however for your machine. By donJ - Central Scotland - 23 November 2009
  • might be fitted with inferior cheap chinese brushes in the past. check stator on motor for smoothness/no ridges that would wear brushes down. also check electrial spade connectors for overheating as will cause insufficient power to brushes and cause arcing/diminshe brush life. typically the plastic surrounding them goes brittle when overheated and spade goes black. ensure good clean connection on both brushes. grease bearings slightly with spray lithium grease (halfords next to WD40) prolong bearing life and ease load on brushes By derek645 - portsmouth - 01 November 2009

Carbon brushes typically last between two and ten years on most machines depending on frequency of use.

Hi Hazel Your best bet for help on fitting these brushes is to ask your local Hotpoint or washing machine specialist (or ask a friend or relative!). Good luck!
