The brushes should be extended on hard floors and retracted on carpet.

If your hose end is 35 mm this is suitable, see the video attached.
If I order a Miele floor tool can I send it back if it doesn't fit my old Miele vacuum cleaner. The type is difficult to read but it looks like S 3101 ??

Our floor head is very difficult to change from carpet to hard floor mode (and back), will this one be easier (if it is compatible)?

The 'button for changing the brushes is designed to be pressed by your foot and therefore can be quite stiff in operation. The new head is not likely to be significantly different unless there is a problem with your old head.
