This appears not to be a washable filter and should be replaced regularly or when any reduction of performance is noted.

Washing the filter is likely to have caused a significant reduction in air flow of your machine. Providing the motor has not been allowed to over heat and damage by replacing the filter the performance should return.

There are several reasons why to replace an old filter. The first is old filters will start to pass dust and smells back into the room this can irritate allergies , secondly air will pass through easier as the holes are not full off dust and particles. This would reduce air flow, suction and the cooling effect of the airflow so can lead to overheating and more power used.
