this happened after it had been running for approx 4 hours and it was switched off for a break.

  • Thanks I checked the capacitor again, and noticed that the terminal end plate had lifted by approx. 1mm on one side. Ordered the new capacitor and fitted. Shredder now works fine. Thanks for the advice. By ron - - 12 November 2014

If the motor has got very hot it is possible the insulation has broken down and the motor has now shorted out. Check this capacitor is not short or showing signs of damage. if OK suspect the motor.

We have added a 'diagnosis' video to the part. If all checks out OK the problem will be the capacitor and can be proved with this meter: Stock Number ES1741061

Check that any vents around the case are clear of debris and that it can circulate air to cool it. if it continues to overheat when not being 'over worked' then it is likely to be the motor failing.

If the motor is not jammed this capacitor may be the problem.

I've bought this item already after the old capacitor blew but don't remember which wire (red or blue) goes to which terminal. There are no polarity markings so I assume it is either way. Is there anyway to confirm please? Many thanks.

This capacitor provides a supply to one of the motor windings and couples AC electricity. There are no markings as it can be connected either way without causing a problem due to its design.
