Have you come to shut your oven door only to find it keeps popping back open? If it’s become difficult to close the problem is most likely associated with the door catch or the striker pin.
If you’ve never replaced a door catch or striker pin before, our video and written guide below is sure to fill you with the confidence to tackle the project yourself without damaging your cooker.
This video shows an example on how to remove or replace the part on a typical machine, some models may be different but the procedure should be similar.
What You Will Need:
Step 1 - Safety Advice
Safety First! Please make sure that you have disconnected the appliance from the mains before beginning any repair.
Step 2 - Remove The Side Panel And The Door Catch
To gain access to the door catch we need to remove the side panel by unscrewing two screws at the front and two at the back. The door catch should now be visible and you can easily remove it by unscrewing the two screws.
Step 3 - Fit The New Door Catch
With your new door catch slot it into place making sure the holes line up in place for the screws to enter. eSpares Top Tip: half tighten one screw in place so it holds the door catch stable, whilst fixing the other screw in and then tighten both.
Please Note: the holes on the door catch will not come threaded, however, once you fix the screw in they will cut their own thread.
Once the new door catch is fixed properly, close the door to check it closes properly.
On some cooker doors, the striker pin is adjustable so you can raise or lower the height of the pin to make sure it engages properly inside the door catch and does not pop open when hot.
Step 4 - Change The Striker Pin If Required
If you need help on replacing the door striker pin it's actually very straightforward to do. Grab a pair of pliers and hold the door whilst loosening the striker pin. With your new striker pin handy screw it in by hand and finish by tightening any locking nut with the pliers.
Step 5 - Put The Side Panel Back Into Place
Once you’ve checked and are happy that the door shuts properly, you can finish this job by screwing the side panel back into place with the four screws you removed earlier. Make sure the side panel is flush with the oven cavity when fitting the screws.
There you go, you’ve now fixed the oven catch or striker pin for your oven all by yourself! We hope by following our article the replacement procedure was not as daunting as you once thought.
