After thinking that I may have to buy another mower, I scoured the internet for a possible spare part and discovered espares. The part was not only available but a short video showed how simple it was to fit. My order arrived in about 3 days and I was able to fit the part exactly as the video demonstrated.

The cutting disc on the lightweight Flymo mowers is an oval plastic spinner with little circular cutout 'nests' in which the rounded ends of the two plastic cutting blades are seated. When the blades strike stones or the assembly suffers some unusual mechanical stress the molded body of the spinner can crack along the thinnest part of the 'nest', causing the blade to be ejected like a tiny bullet under centrifugal force. Each time the blade is replaced it is shot out again. The only way to correct this fault is to replace the spinner (called the 'cutting disc'), which luckily is very easy to do. The assembly simply comes away from the wheel by twisting and pulling, like removing a 'bayonet' electric light bulb from its socket. The new assembly is fitted in exactly the same way but twisting in the opposite direction. You need to hold the spindle still by gripping the plastic fan-blade assembly while you do this. No tools are needed, a firm grip is sufficient. Once fitted the efficiency of the Flymo is restored to new. The entire job takes under five minutes to complete.
