10 year-old washing machine. Excessive vibration and noise developed at 1200 rpm spin. Took back off and Tub Dampers felt slack. Fitted a pair of new Dampers supplied by espares. Original Damper fixings ( Bolt 80n ) were difficult to remove. I used a slip wrench as a lever on the polythene bolt heads. The 4 Bolts were successfully extracted but were damaged in the process so it was good that new Bolts were supplied. The original Bolts were fitted with a white grease lubricant. This white grease was not supplied with the new parts so I salvaged some from the old Bolts and applied it to the new ones before fitting. I compared the old Dampers with the new. The new ones were much more effective so I was expecting a fix. When the machine was tried with the new parts fitted there was still a noise and vibration at 1200 rpm spin. Also the wash emerged contaminated with grease smears. Further investigation revealed that the Drum bearing had failed. A new rear-half of the Tub is required to fix this along with a very major strip-down of the machine. The part would cost about £ 155-00 so ; in my opinion, it was an uneconomic repair to a 10-year-old appliance. The machine was scrapped with the new parts fitted. I should have been more thorough with my fault-finding in the first place.

Also to note from above user:

In order to check the Drum bearing of a 10-year-old AEG Lavamat washing machine it would be best to slip the drive belt off between the motor and the pulley on the back of the Drum. This will release the Drum from the tension of the drive belt. Grab hold of the Drum agitating fins through the front port hole and rock it up and down. I found significant play on my old machine. This play is much less with the drive belt in place.

  • Q Is there anyway I can modify your model to suit my machine? Ex engineer. 1 Answer

After a long search I thought I had finally found the washing machine damper that I was after. Unfortunately none of the model numbers matched mine i.e. 91400242400. Hence my query.

Hi, we do not recommend modifying products as they may get damaged during the process or cause further problems to your appliance if done incorrectly. What we recommend for you to do is fill in our short Part Inquiry form and we will phone our suppliers and see if we can source the exact part you require. here is a link to our Part Inquires page: http://www.espares.co.uk/contact/sales

  • Q machine vibrates badly on spin. Could this be due to being badly/partly loaded or the dampers wearing out. 0 Answers

The machine is 15years old and is otherwise in good nick. How can I tell if the dampers are on the way out. Is there a test?. Is there any other part likely to be the cause. Ian
