but it seems more like a thin wire cable is caught up
and their is more than two/three bits of cable you can see is it still the belt or is their otherwiring/belts under the hub circle thing sorry not techinical with lawnmowers

Sounds lyk your machine has picked up something causing causing a tangle & the belt to snap / break off which is what happened to mine.
