Can you just throw these balls in the washing machine instead of the tumble dryer?

A: No, they are designed for dryer use only.

A: Hi Nineo, You could put these balls in your washing machine but I'm not sure what the benefits would be. They would help agitate your clothes but that's also what the drum lifters are for. I have seen products for the washing machine that are simliar in form but supposedly reduce limescale. The real benefit of these balls are that they help reduce the time it takes to dry your clothes - thereby reducing the amount of energy consumption used.

Where is the science?
Q: I am not disputing the claim but 25% reduction is very, very good so where is the science for it. Show me some and I will buy the balls - may do anyway for the softening action.

A: Hi Kyzer Jock, I apologise for the delay in responding to your query! The 'up to 25%' is what the manufacturer has printed on the packaging of this product. Their official website is here if you'd like to see for yourself: www.dryerballs.co.uk Basically what the balls do is they agitate the clothes which means more surface area is exposed to the hot air from the dryer. This is what helps decrease the amount of time it takes to dry your clothes. However the figure it 'up to 25%' and not an empirical '25%' so how much energy you save will really be up to what kind of load you're drying and your model of tumble dryer.
can you use them in a combined washer dryer

A: Yes, our marketing director does - but he puts his in when the drying cycle starts. He's been recommending this product to me for ages.
Do the balls reduce static cling?
Q: I have to use drier sheets in all my washes to prevent the static build up from jumpers, and tights especially - so will these balls also prevent the awful static as well as save me money on my leccy bill?

A: Hi Mrscheeks, these balls should help reduce static build up on tights and jumpers. They help reduce crease and wrinkles, and should get between the clothes, preventing static build up.
