People unsure how long they can keep food in their fridge have been issued some tips by an expert.
Writing in the Chicago Sun-Times, China Millman said items which are purchased locally will generally last longer and taste fresher than food bought from a grocery store.
She went on to say that produce which is left in the fridge beyond its labelled expiry date can be fine as supermarkets and shops tend to use "sell by" or "best before" dates, as opposed to "do not use after" dates.
Ms Millman stated: "They ensure quality rather than safety, partly because when food goes bad it often has a lot more to do with how it's handled once you take it home and when you open the package rather than when the food was picked or processed."
Another tip offered by the expert is to smell fresh food, such as fruit, before buying it in order to ensure it is fresh.
According to figures produced by the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention, nearly a quarter of food poisoning victims contract their illness from home-cooked meals, the Jamaica Gleaner reports.
