Consumers may not be aware that dishwashers are the greener alternative to washing by hand, one expert claims.
Tobin Hack states in an article for Plenty Magazine that some people believe the amount of energy used in handwashing is less than that generated by a dishwasher - but adds this is not true.
Responding to one reader who believes this to be the case, he cites research from the University of Bonn in Germany that concluded "dinner dishes are just one of those things in life that machines do better".
He added that in fact, "a machine will actually cut back on energy use by about half" and suggests only washing full loads and avoiding pre-rinsing as ways to make dishwasher use even more efficient.
A recent article in the Post-Bulletin said that those looking for a new home should check
washing machines, dryers and dishwashers to see if they are in need of repair.
"Bring a few dirty dishes and towels of your own if need be," the article suggested.
However, should such items need attention a number of
dishwasher parts are available that could be of help - such as the Zanussi lower basket wheel and support.
