By monitoring the level of energy home appliances are consuming households can take the first step towards becoming carbon neutral, it has been suggested.
In an article for the Journal this week, Anna Heywood offers advice on reducing the amount of electricity used in the kitchen and states that the first thing to do is watching where waste can be cut.
"Until you start measuring your consumption, you can't monitor it or decide where to make reductions," she states.
She advises purchasing items such as energy-saving plugs that can help make fridge-freezers,
dishwashers and other home appliances more efficient.
Ms Heywood's comments are in response to one reader who claims to have seen a significant change in their habits having installed such energy-monitoring products.
A number of appliance parts are currently available that could help cut energy in this way including thermostats from
Hotpoint, Candy's Energy Save Knob and the LEC Energy-Saving Switch.
