Air conditioning units can be great when the summer months arrive, however when the conditions are unreliable it could be beneficial to opt for a dehumidifier, it has been suggested.
According to a recent article for Consumer Reports, installing or repairing a dehumidifier can ensure that a home is protected from a range of issues that can arise when humidity is too high.
It is noted that although many people see air conditioning as the answer for summer, moisture is sometimes better removed with dehumidifiers and this can lead to a number of health benefits as well as limit damage to the home.
"These machines will prevent a host of problems. Left unchecked, a household relative humidity above 50 percent can breed mildew, dust mites, and mould that exacerbate allergies and asthma," it adds.
Among the models recommended by the site are units from GE, Kenmore, LG, DeLonghi, and Whirlpool.
The San Luis Obispo Tribune recently advised, however, that running air conditioning alongside a dehumidifier can be counter productive and taxing on energy.
