Wind turbine powering home appliances

20/05/2008
A wind turbine is being used to power appliances in one of the world's greenest homes on a remote Scots Island.

The house does not go without appliances and the dishwasher, cooker, fridge and toaster are all powered by a wind turbine, according to the Daily Record.

Rain water is also incorporated into the washing machine to save on water usage, on the £200,000 three-bedroom home in the Shetland Islands.

The house is zero-carbon and the retired residents, Michael and Dorothy Rea, are hoping the island's 100mph winds will provide regular energy to their appliances.

It will now be used a benchmark for future green homes by the Scottish government, with the prime minister's officials

Figures recently revealed that more UK homeowners are buying green appliances, according to research from GfK.

Sales of A-rated appliances grew by 12 per cent last year, with rises in electricity prices being blamed.
