Lawn mower can help to tackle cress easily

13/05/2008
Green fingered gardeners can easily tackle and kill cress which is creeping onto their lawns between mowing, according to a source.

The Sunday Times's gardening expert recommends one environmentally-friendly way to tackle the problem is to rake the patches before getting the lawn mower out.

It should raise the loose stems above the grass level and cause them to be chopped off when mowing, however other methods can be used.

Using a nitrogen rich fertiliser in spring-time can help to combat the fast growing weed.

However, those wanting to be environmentally-sound should keep a small patch of cress as they shoot pink flowers which are good for pollinating bees.

The plant is particularly troublesome as is spreads by creeping stems which root at various points along the lawn.

Gardeners have previously been advised to prepare their outside space for the hotter climate, which has been predicted for the coming years.
