Dyson attracted to "dull" products

12/05/2008
Sir James Dyson, the man behind the famous vacuum cleaner, says he is attracted to transforming "dull, utilitarian" items.

The comment came as the appliance manufacturer launches his new style hand drier in Canada, reports theglobeandmail.com.

Sir Dyson began his inventions in 1977, when he released the Ballbarrow, which uses a ball to pivot on, rather than a wheel.

The same technology has recently been introduced into one the company's vacuum cleaners, claiming to allow easily mobility and access to hard to reach spots.

However, the inventor does not have high ambitions to overturn luxury products, telling the website: "I'm attracted to dull, utilitarian things that nobody likes".

Following the first sale of a Dyson vacuum cleaner in the early 1990s the company now has over 2,000 employees across the world, with 500 of them working on new inventions in the town of Malmesbury, in the UK.

Dyson currently sells $1 billion (£0.5 billion) worth of vacuum cleaners in the world.
