Freezers can reduce wastage and food bill

09/05/2008
Using your freezer can cut on wasted food and so reduce the cost of the weekly shop, according to one source.

By buying a mixture of frozen and fresh items food can be preserved for longer in the freezer until it is needed, reducing the chance it will go off, reports the Independent.

Also, when items get near their use-by date people should check whether they can be frozen, to save the food from going off.

By cooking too much of a meal, when you have lots of chilled items, freezing the leftovers means wastage can again be avoided.

The advice follows the release of information yesterday which found the British public throws away £10 billion worth of food each year, said the newspaper.

Most of this, according to the government's research, is untouched food and can cost the average family £420 a year.

The study was carried out by trawling through over 2,000 people's bins who signed up to the study.
