Homeowners beware of vampire appliances

07/05/2008
Homeowners need to beware of 'vampire' appliances, which are never fully on or off and so use a large amount of electricity.

As the credit crunch hits homes across the country more people are looking to cut their energy usage and so cut their bills, with tackling these vampire appliances being one way of doing this, reports Newsdy.com.

Some people assume that when appliances are in stand-by mode they are turned off, however, this is not true and they still use power.

Rozanne Weissman, a spokeswoman for the Alliance to Save Energy, told the website: "People think off means off. It doesn't."

A whole range of appliances, use energy when on stand-by, with a microwave using more energy to power the clock than it does to cook food across its lifetime.

"By making smarter choices in our daily lives we can cut energy use, the amount we pay for energy and help the environment simultaneously," Ms Weissman added.

Research from Bye Bye Standby showed that four million tonnes of CO2 are wasted each year through appliances being left on standby.
