Appliance buying needs 'flexibility'

07/05/2008
Buying new appliances for the kitchen can be a tricky job, with one home improver advising that research is the key.

Heather Goss, a writer for Washingtonian.com, said that buying a microwave and dishwasher proved more of a trial for her than first predicted.

Sticking to budgets was one of the issues found to affect the buying of appliances, with many models being pricey, especially when they have new features.

Ms Goss found the experience "agonising" but urged shoppers to "be flexible" with their choice to make the process smoother.

The DIY expert also discovered that finding a compact dishwasher was hard, with most shops only stocking the full-size models.

Smaller, 18-inch, dishwashers can be ideal for smaller kitchens or for single people living alone.

Another option for those wanting a pint-sized machine is to buy a drawer dishwasher, which is fairly new technology, she said.

The Sunday Mirror recently advised that when redoing a kitchen homeowners should consider what its main function is and cater the appliances to that.
