Tax break for energy-efficient appliances
02/05/2008
Energy-efficient appliances in the US have been given a tax break for their environmentally friendly properties.
The tax cut applies to some appliances which have the Energy Star rating, in a move which is being rolled out to encourage people in the state of Texas to replace their older-inefficient models, reports the Victoria Advocate.
Appliances in the scheme include dishwashers which are priced at less than $6,000 (£3,000), according to the organisation.
Susan Combs, the Texas comptroller, said: "Shoppers will pay no sales tax on selected Energy Star products and they will save even more on their future utility bills as Energy Star qualified appliances use ten to 50 per cent less energy and water than standard models, according to the US Environmental Protection Agency."
The first day these breaks will come into place is Memorial Day weekend, on May 24th to 26th, reports the newspaper.
One shop manager hopes the move will drive more people into the store on the holiday weekend.
It was recently reported that many shoppers find it difficult to determine between different energy-efficiency ratings when buying a new appliance.
