Keyboards 'dirtier than toilet seats'

01/05/2008
Workers should take their cleaning products into the office this month, to tackle their dirty keyboard and mouse.

A new survey has revealed that some keyboards are dirtier than a toilet seat, with bugs like E coli and S aureus being found on them.

Scientists carrying out the work for Which? Computing swabbed keyboards, door handles and toilet seats to compare the germ levels.

One keyboard was found to have five times more bacteria than a toilet seat.

Sarah Kidner, the editor of the magazine, advised workers to take their cleaning products into work

"Why not give your PC a spring clean? It's quite simple to do and could prevent your computer from becoming a health hazard," she stated.

The survey discovered that just 22 per cent of people cleaned their keyboard on a monthly basis, with one in ten never doing it.

One company has released a computer mouse which doubles up as a vacuum cleaner to clean dirt from the desk.
