Fridges have become more than a place to store our food and drink, with manufacturers now trying to give it many features to make it so much more, according to one writer.
Mary Umberger, writing for TampaBay.com, said that "all manner of techno-wizardry" has been included in the appliances, many of which are just novelty.
The manufacturers are aiming to make people want the fridges, rather than need a new model, much as is done in the car industry.
Four-door models are the latest introduction to the market, with two side-by-side French doors for the fridge and two separate slide-out freezer drawers.
The fridge market is being particularly targeted as sales of the appliances dipped last year by almost ten per cent.
However, Ms Umberger reminds readers that there is no need to rush out and buy new models, with most appliances lasting for 12 to 15 years.
The Herald Tribune recently reported that spending money on the kitchen and its appliances can help to sell a house.
