Before the 20th century, people seeking to freshen up their homes with a good spring clean had to use brooms and move their furniture outside.
However, according to the LA Times, having to take rugs and carpets outside to remove the dust prompted a number of would-be inventors to create a variety of possible solutions.
Yet, it wasn't until William
Hoover, who bought a patent for primitive vacuum cleaner from James Murray Spangler, began selling the Model O 100 years ago that a commercially successful electrical vacuum cleaner featuring a filter bag and attachments was available.
The newspaper notes that a Model O is currently on display at the
Hoover Historical Centre in Ohio.
Ann Haines, operations director of the centre, said that visitors still like to "turn it on, listen to the motor and watch the bag inflate".
Since marketing its first vacuum,
Hoover has gone on to become one of the most recognised electrical brands and is now part of TTI Floor Care North America.
