Canister vacuums 'better than upright models'

31/03/2008
Canister vacuum cleaners have many advantages over upright models, with them being lighter, easier to use and a more flexible option, according to one expert.

A canister model can reach under furniture more easily and is lighter as the user only has to move "a light wand" rather than the whole machine, says Robin O'Brien, writing for the Los Angeles Chronicle.

In addition, he says, an upright often does not have onboard tools, which can be "a real chore to have to fetch", whereas canister models tend to.

Mr O'Brien adds that "anything an upright can do, so can a canister - and most times, better".

However, he warns that customers' most frequent problem is not buying the wrong brand, but the wrong type and so advises a list of requirements is made before purchasing the machine.

It is also advised when buying canister model that it features brushrolls, which make it easier to lift dirt out of the carpet.

Consumer Reports advises that people consider the type of flooring they have before making a vacuum cleaner purchase.
