Turn off appliances to highlight global warming

27/03/2008
People around the UK and the world will be turning their appliances off this weekend to highlight the issue of global warming.

As part of Earth Hour, households will turn off all lights and electrical appliances, to highlight the link between global warming and electricity.

Landmarks like the Sydney Opera House and the Golden Gate Bridge will join the campaign by turning off their lights in the campaign, which begun in Australia last year.

It has been reported that 24 large cities around the world are taking part, however key items like street lights will be kept on.

The UK's first Energy Savings Day (E-Day) last month failed to get people to turn off their appliances.

Energy used on E-Day was monitored by the National Grid, with figures showing that usage actually increased by 0.1 per cent on the day.

A group called Bye Bye Standby said that most people in the UK are not standby aware, with 64 per cent of the group surveyed having ten or more appliances plugged in at any one time.
