Size and placing is key in being energy efficient

27/03/2008
People wanting to buy appliances which are more environmentally friendly should note a few things like size and placing of the new appliance, according to an expert.

Size is a major factor with both fridges and washing machines and buyers should only buy a size to suit them, reports Info Link.

A larger washing machine will use more water than is necessary and running a fridge with a big capacity will produce almost half a tonne more greenhouse gases than an energy rated model.

When choosing a freezer it is worth noting that a chest one offers more efficiency than upright models, in addition, freezers with as little exposure on the door will use less energy, said the website.

Placing the appliance once it is home is another key factor to saving energy and prolonging the life of it.

Fridges and freezers should not be placed near cookers of stoves, as this will cause them to have to work overtime to cool the inside.

According to the website, appliances which require hot water, like washing machines, should be placed as close to the hot tap as possible.
