The prime minister has called for the EU to cut taxes on consumer goods which are more energy efficient than others.
Gordon Brown, speaking on BBC Radio 4's PM Programme, said that environmentally-friendly products should have a cut in VAT.
"That could be fridges or washing machines or dishwashers. It could be electric light bulbs. It could go right across to insulation products where people are trying to make their homes draft proof."
He added that the climate change strategy for the world should start in Europe and that the tax system should be used to make buying these products cheaper.
"This is a weapon in the fight against climate change that has got to be considered," said Mr Brown.
The prime minister stated that the move may encourage manufacturers to produce more environmentally beneficial products too.
