Residents in the UK are being urged to switch off their appliances for the first ever Energy Saving Day, which begins today.
The E-Day campaign across the country starts at 6pm tonight., continuing until 6pm on Thursday.
People are being asked to turn off flights and household appliances which are not in use to save energy and reduce the carbon footprint.
Research from uSwitch showed that many people are overcharging their items, with 22 million mobile phones being unnecessarily charged each day, accounting for 14.1 billion hours of wasted energy.
Ann Robinson, director of consumer policy at uSwitch, said: "We are increasingly dependent on technology and this is coming at a high cost to ourselves and the planet.
"We need to understand how to use our gadgets in a responsible and energy efficient way and learn to avoid wasting energy by needlessly charging-up or leaving things on stand-by," she added.
The Energy Savings Trust says that £1 billion worth of electricity is wasted each year from leaving appliances on standby.
