More UK homeowners are buying energy saving appliances, according to research company GfK.
Sales of 'A' rated appliances grew by 12 per cent in 2007, with the recent rise in electricity and gas prices being cited as one reason.
GfK said that many British people now feel a "need to be green" which has also lead to the rise.
The rating system ranks appliances like washing machines, tumble dryers and fridges from level A to level G.
Some of the most efficient fridges and freezers are now rated by A+ and A++, according to the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs.
The Energy Savings Trust (EST) says the rating is designed to tell consumers which products are the most energy efficient in their category.
Some of the benefits include lower running costs and helping to prevent climate change.
Products recommended by the EST for being highly energy-efficient include a
Zanussi tumble dryer, the
Hotpoint integrated fridge and an
Indesit fridge freezer.
